The town of Creighton is one of two municipalities with town status in northern Saskatchewan. The population of this East Side community is 1,713. The Town office phone is 688-8253 and their facsimile is 688-4764. Creighton is situated in northeastern Saskatchewan near the Saskatchewan-Manitoba boundary, almost on the 55th parallel of latitude. The town is three kilometers south and west of Flin Flon, and 425 kilometers east of Prince Albert. Creighton is situated on Highway #106 (the Hanson Lake Road to Smeaton and Prince Albert) and on Highway #167 (giving access to the picturesque Amisk Lake Resort).

Creighton had its beginnings in the 1930's after the Department of Natural Resources constructed a road from Flin Flon to Amisk Lake. People began to settle along this road. After the end of the Second World War the Department of Natural Resources surveyed a townsite and lots were made available for building on for residential and business purposes. They were largely taken by young men returning from the armed services, and a community began to be properly developed. Creighton was incorporated as a village in 1952 when the population was 1200. The Village was raised to Town status in 1957 with a population of 1705. The population at present is 1668.

Being in the Precambrian Shield, the chief industry is mining, with limited farming. Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited developed a mining, milling and smelting complex in the late 1920's and early 1930's in what is now the Flin Flon-Creighton area. The principal minerals are copper and zinc, with smaller amounts of gold, silver, cadium and other minerals. The plant mill treats some 6,300 tons of copper ore per day. The Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company is presently working two mines in the Creighton-Flin Flon area. Many other Creighton people are employed in Flin Flon by the hospital, garages, stores, offices, schools, government departments, etc. Other resources in the area are forestry and tourism. Tourist resorts are located at nearby lakes such as Amisk Lake, Jan Lake, Deschambault Lake, Pelican Lakes, and Leaf Rapids. All these resorts are on all-weather roads.

This area is served by the Royal Bank of Canada, the Bank of Nova Scotia, and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, all in Flin Flon. There is a Credit Union in Flin Flon. The Provincial Government provides Environmental & Resource Management, Probation, Social Services, and Health Services in Creighton. A Mine Recorder from Energy and Mines Department, Highways Department and a Health Inspector visit our area on a regular basis. There is also a motor vehicle license issuer in Creighton. The Federal Government has a Post Office in Creighton. The Canadian Armed Forces has a weather and meteorological station eight kilometers west of Creighton. The Saskatchewan Liquor Board has a large store in Creighton.

We have new state of the art water and sewer treatment plants, constructed in 1994. The town is completely serviced by water distribution system and a sewage disposal system. The systems are completely underground. Electrical power is supplied by Sask Power. The Creighton area currently purchases power from Manitoba Hydro. Creighton was connected to the Flin Flon exchange of the Manitoba Telephone System. Since 1988, Creighton is serviced by Sask Tel (306). The Town of Creighton is policed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The Creighton Detachment consists of 2.5 town members and 2.5 rural members. The Fire Department consists of a volunteer fire brigade of 20 members.

Creighton has one Public Elementary School (K-9) with an enrollment of 450 pupils and a staff of 27 teachers, plus 10 support staff, one full and 2 part time librarians, a Home and School coordinator, as well as a Guidance Counsellor. Northlands College provides a wide range of programs and services for adult learners throughout the northern half of Saskatchewan.

The Department of Northern Health Services provides the usual health region services, e.g. health nurses, community mental health worker, community program consultant (assisting with Health Education and Homecare Boards) in Creighton; also a dental therapist and dental assistant work out of the Creighton School. Flin Flon has a compliment of 10 doctors. Flin Flon Hospital has a capacity of 85 beds. There are 3 dentists, 2 optometrists, 1 chiropractor, and 2 reflexologists, and 1 massage therapist. Ambulance service is provided for the complete Flin Flon-Creighton-Denare Beach area.

The Goldbelt Gazette is published once a week in Creighton. The Reminder is published 5 days per week in Flin Flon. Daily papers from Winnipeg and Saskatoon are available in Creighton. Creighton and Flin Flon jointly provide a fine library in Flin Flon. There is a museum in Flin Flon. The Town has a new and modern community hall, which is owned and operated by Creighton Co-operative Community Centre. Creighton and Flin Flon support a horticultural society, many ethnic cultural societies, figure skating, drama club, music festival, trout festival, winter carnival, trade unions, etc.

The Mennonite Church has an active congregation in Creighton. In Flin Flon there are United, Anglican, Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Ukrainian Orthodox, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Baptist, Presbyterian, Salvation Army, Jehovah's Witnesses, Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Alliance congregations, as well as others.

Chamber of Commerce, Elks, Kinsmen, Rotary, Masons, Odd Fellows, Loyal Orange Lodge, Royal Canadian Legion, Knights of Columbus, Lions, Red Cross, Cancer Society, Mental Health, Oldster's Club, Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Brownies as well as others are all active in the Creighton-Flin Flon area. Creighton has a sports complex consisting of a regulation hockey ice and four sheets of curling ice, all artificial. At present this facility operates from October to April. During the summer months other programs are provided. As well, Creighton provides an excellent outdoor spray/wading pool and park. The Creighton schoolyard has been reorganized and provides an excellent new ball diamond (artificially lit), basketball court, tennis court, and football-soccer area. Other recreation outlets in the area are outdoor theatre, bowling, archery, skeet shooting, small bore range, hockey, tennis, badminton, indoor and outdoor swimming, skiing (both snow and water), and snowmobiling.

There are 600 houses in Creighton, all being fully serviced with water and sewer, providing 625 dwelling units. There are four apartments providing 16 dwelling units. There is a trailer court with accommodation for 41 units.
