Alice Castel
Multi-contributor
Sandy Bay, SK
Alice came from Pukatawagan, Manitoba but has been in Sandy Bay for 30 years
now. Her list of roles and tasks is enough to fill a school blackboard: northern
recreation coordinator (NRCC), housing committee volunteer, Kids First North
home visitor and even with all this, a local housing volunteer. Where does she
get all the energy for her work? She wants to motivate students (and others)
to pursue their dreams, goals and best possibilities. She does this through
encouragement, support and providing opportunities for youth to participate.
Specifically what does Alice do in each role she has taken on?
NRCC
- Carry out recreation programs and find volunteers
Kids First
- Support mothers before they give birth (prenatal) to children up to
36 months old
- Provide education and guidance through meetings and home visits
- Support community programs for mothers
Local Housing
- Find solutions to local housing needs
- Attends meetings
Local Volunteer
- Canoe program, youth baseball
- Promotes summer recreation programs
- Supervises students in summer job positions
What major skills does Alice need to do her job?
- Communication and persuasion skills to get people involved and make
changes for the better
- Good organization and office skills for maintaining schedules and running
activities
What’s in a typical day for Alice?
In the morning it’s all NRCC and recreation coordinating.
In the afternoon it’s Kids First and visiting moms and their young children.
In the evening (how many hours does she work!), she coordinates school and community
recreation.
Even with all this work, Alice still finds time for canoeing with family and
going fishing. Alice Castel, a multi-contributor in Sandy Bay.
